Well what a week I had last week.my diabetic runaway neice showed up at my place in middle on a brand new appt.it was awful. I refunded the gentleman his money and apologized. I’ve always been enthralled with Holland’s notorious red light disctrict;equally so with European history of prostitution and brothels. You can imagine my sheer joy of discovering “Storyville” a legal red light district existing in New Orleans from 1898-1912. These were the days of capitalism and politicians had presented this to the public as a way to keep the city safer,and much like today politicians and local judges and lawwmen of all for were frequent visitors of these bars and brothels.
Imagine , the houses were run by madams and mahogany furniture andd walls was everywhere throughout the houses. Red velvet curtains hung and candles were lit everywhere.Tinkling chandeliers hung dazzling, and the crystals would be polished each morning. I can imagine a woman lying in one of the bedrooms upstairs,petting and stroking a client, listening to the pianoman belt out rag time songs below. Perhaps the client was vile and she would wait for it to end while hearing the chandeliers clinkle below,mixing with laughter of the gentlemen and women below ,the women whispering sexy secrets hoping to entice a customer upstairs.
Beer was called roughtop then and working women who were able to get visiting gentlemen to buy beer were given a cut. After chatting with the men sitting at strewn about tables playing cards for awhile dressed as plantation workers of fine gentlemen, the women,who dressed in anything from fancy dresses and wigs decorated with bright purple ostrich feathers all the way down to the completely naked wearing only heels, the woman noticed he was not good for anything ( buying beer or a trip upstairs ) she would carefully sneak a feather into the back of his hat, a signal the other girls that he was a waste of time. These musicians drew men into the brothels and put him in the mood to spend money. Many jazz artists made their start here , like Ferdinand Omat,otherwise known as “Jellyroll Morton.” Initially destitue and outcast from his family for playing in whorehouses, Morton would play songs with lyrics such as ” All the whores go crazy by the way I ride.” Morton soon became a pimp and had a diamond put into his tooth. He then went on to become the father of Jazz. Jazz was very important to brothels and in turn got a huge start here. The women that worked the brothels called “the professors”.
Not every brothel was all persian rugs and piano,no ambient chandeliers and mahogany furniture.There were rows of cheap and shabbily made row houses called “cribs” which contained nothing more then a bed and a small washing area. Unfortunately, due to the ridiculous segregation that was still plaguing America at this time ,”women of color” and ungifted prostitues worked in these cribs.
Black women were broken into a few groups,based upon the tone of their skin. There were mulattos and mestizo , the most popular group being octaroons. These women, mostly from Europe were very light skinned and spoke with exotic accents.Octaroons were highest in demand as white men of that time period could sasisfy their curiosity by sleeping with a woman of colour yet was light enough to appease the old ignorant views and fears of racism they had been brought up with.
Fetishes, though not as developed as today were extremely common then. SWomen would dance naked in the windows to entice men in. One of the favourite activites then in the brothels was to hand a huge ham from the ceiling and the naked women would all take turns kicking it, thus exposing their crotches.Women developed tricks like a woman named Olivia, who could roll an oyster down the length of her body and back up again. Downtimes in the brothels women would sit around and play cards or eat poorboys, without the onions of course.Children of the prostitues, called trick babies lived in the attics and would come out and play in downtime. From Saks 5th avenue brothels to 5 and dime brothels ( this is where the term originated) life was pretty much the same for all of these women,some lives were heightened by a caring madam, though most were callous and traded or fired girls regularly.
In between appointments women would clean themselves and tidy their room. A New prospect was inspected for disease and sent to be cleaned with blue linement, often done by the children. This was no different then if your parents ran a bakery and the children helped bake.
At the turn of the century, this was quite a thriving district. Actors, theatres and music clubs populated the streets and ran their business side by side with the madams. Police would often come around for payoffs. B girls patrolled the bar hoping to entice a gentlemen into buying a beer so she could earn her profit off of it. Cocaine, called “nose candy” was prevalent and drinking, gambling and fighting were common occurences. other red light disctrict was a close knit society, where jazz and sex went hand in hand.Storyville brought in one million dollars a month and created many lucrative business selling everything from bed matresses to masks and sexx wear and astringent said to clean a man of stds.Women in the bordellos often stayed for life, the only alternative being a factory worker making as much in a month as one might in a night.
How I wish I could hear the music pouring out of these places, run my hand along the curved mahogany furniture,see the swinging chandeliers and multitudes of characters that frequented the res light district. Wouldn’t it have been marvelous. ? Even friend of Teddy Roosevelt were in constant hang out here, so you know they must of been a riot !
